Lockheed Martin Case Study

Lockheed_PortalThe Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, has 13 plant locations and offices in various countries throughout the world.

The Case for a Streaming Infrastructure

There were several driving factors that led Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics Company to look for a comprehensive streaming video infrastructure. One driving factor was the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics All Hands Meetings for the entire Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Organization, which recently climbed from 4,400 people to over 6,000. In order to hold this meeting, Lockheed needed to rent a coliseum, which among other things caused a huge traffic jam in downtown Fort Worth. The overall event was extremely expensive, but even more significant, most employees would head straight home afterwards versus heading back into the office. As a result, the organization suffered from a high loss of employee productivity.

Another driving factor for a streaming infrastructure centered on engineer productivity and speed of problem solving. For example, engineers of F/A-22 aircrafts are located all over the world, however, there are three main production sites. If a problem came up, the engineer would have to physically fly out to the production site to solve it. This resulted in delivery time slippage, wasted money from travel, and wasted productivity from the engineer sacrificing valuable time. And yet another driving factor arose when Lockheed Martin was first selected for the JSF Program. (The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is a supersonic, multi-role fighter designed for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the U.K. Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.) This was the biggest awarded government project on the planet.

On the day of the announcement, Lockheed Martin had to deliver information to multiple audiences, including remote employees, employees who were at their desks and various external constituents. Because of the distributed audience and importance of a consistent message, using enterprise video streaming was the logical solution.

Qumu is currently being used as the management and publishing application for executive communications, All Hands meetings, and engineer collaboration. Lockheed is extremely pleased with the success the Qumu product for Enterprise Video Communications provides as well as the support received from the team at Qumu. All needs are met in a very timely fashion.

Since the launch of the streaming initiatives, many other marketing, training and communications groups within the Lockheed Martin Corporation who are looking to achieve similar goals have approached this team for assistance.

Benefits

As a result of the new streaming infrastructure, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company has realized a number of business benefits. For one, its constituents are now provided with easy and timely access to information. The company benefits from enhanced communications, better customer service and increased efficiency of employees. Publishers throughout the company now have access to standardized templates that enforce consistent branching and prevent non-standard presentations from being published. Most importantly, Lockheed has saved a considerable amount of money through streaming remote training, presentations and meetings.

Lockheed’s Streaming Infrastructure Vision

The vision of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is to provide a one-stop shop for end users to go for all of their rich media communications, including live video webcasting, video on-demand, video conferencing, web conferencing, corporate TV, and more. End users will be able to use any medium desired to communicate and collaborate on-line without ever worrying about or even knowing what’s happening in the background. Eventually this platform will go global and extend to suppliers and partners. With over 300 companies associated with the JSF program alone, this will prove to be an extremely fruitful project.

Multimedia communications will continue to grow as a way for employees, customers, and partners to communicate and learn interactively
